Content Needs More Than a Gut Check

“Can you take a look at this and see how it sounds?" It’s a casual request and one nearly every editor, proofreader or writer has received. Sometimes it comes with a vague follow-up: “Just flag anything that seems off.” That may sound like trust. But it’s really ambiguity.

To be fair, many organizations have tried to address this. Editorial and brand style guides are the go-to tools used to bring consistency to content and style. They help clarify grammar preferences, tone, brand voice and even formatting.

What They Don’t Address Matters More
But what they often don’t address are the riskier, more nuanced issues—the ones that go beyond commas and colors. Things like subtle bias. Claims that haven’t been verified. Inconsistencies in how customer information is presented. Confusing phrasing that undermines trust. These issues, if left unchecked, can have enormous, negative consequences for business.

The Risk of Going with Your Gut
Too often, content risk is managed with gut checks, not clear expectations.

Even highly skilled editors and other reviewers can’t flag what hasn’t been defined. When risk isn't named, it can't be consistently spotted. When feedback criteria aren’t aligned, teams make different calls. And when it’s all informal, there’s no way to measure or improve it. This isn’t a reflection of poor talent. It’s a reflection of an unclear process.

Content Quality Control Can Help
CQC allows teams to move from vague to clear and consistent. From “how does it sound” to “here’s what we always check.” The bottom line is: quality checks and risk mitigation shouldn’t depend on the person who reviews it, or whether they happen to notice something or not. Nearly every organization can benefit from a solid, consistent Content Quality Control process.
